A beautiful, iconic cross-country cycle through Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Northumberland.


We'll be taking you on a sea to sea cycling challenge in the north of England from Whitehaven to Tynemouth, through the northern section of the Lake District and across the Pennines, powered by hearty organic food and warm cosy beds to rest in each night, a perfect adventure for all levels.

FAQs

What kind of places do we stay?

We’ll be staying in a mix of single rooms in guest houses and campsites.

What kind of food will I be eating?

We will provide healthy, nutritious and delicious meals. All vegetarian (apart from at Riley's Fish Shack but vegetarian options are available) and easily catering for vegans. We know how important it is to keep fuelled with nourishing food.

You'll need a little extra cash for any stops in cafes (or pubs) throughout the ride.

Do I need to train? Will I be fit enough?

We can’t emphasise enough the importance of training. We'll be tackling some rather large hills on this trip. Do a favour to your body and get it used to being on a bike. Build it up with regular, easy rides: it’s all about creating a rhythm and getting into the swing of things. 

It’s testing but it’s certainly manageable. In all the years we’ve run this trip everyone has always completed it. 

How about getting there and back again?

You'll need to arrive in Whitehaven by 18:00 on 24th June. We'll be at the train station to meet you. We'll be finished up in Tynemouth from 15:00 on the 27th June so you'll be able to book your passage home from then. We'd recommend booking your bike on the train as early as possible. Great Western Rail allows you to book bikes online.What’s the weather up to?

Whilst this trip is running in the height of the UK summer, the weather is getting increasingly difficult to predict. We'd recommend ensuring you at least have something warm for the evening and a waterproof for the ride.

What cycling grade is this ride? 

We’ve graded this ride 4 out of 5. Only relative to the other trips we run! 

Can I hire a bike from you? 

Unfortunately you need to bring your own bike. However, we can certainly point you in the right direction!

Can I hire a tent from you? 

No, unfortunately not. 

What will the terrain be like?

The route is well ridden, you’ll likely see many other cyclists on the road. We’ll be riding predominately on roads and the surfaces are generally excellent. The only section where we'll divert from roads will be on the final days riding, following the Waskerley Way, a cycle and walking path that’ll take us out of the Pennines and avoid unwanted traffic on our way towards Newcastle. The Waskerley Way, although not tarmacked, is of a good enough quality to ride a road bike along. The majority of climbing will be through the Pennines on the second day of riding and the last day has a large section of gentle downhill.

Why this trip?

So what makes this trip so special I hear you ask? Well not only will we be crossing from sea to sea under our own pedal power, we’ll also be travelling through not one but two national parks. We’ll pass through the valleys and along the lakes of the Lake District, absorbing in the breath-taking view of mountains and hills. We’ll pedal ourselves over the pennines and explore the Waskerley Way. We’ll be fully immersing ourselves in the big outdoors, camping in both the Lake District and the Pennines. There’ll be the opportunity to degulge in both freshwater and seawater dips throughout the ride. We’ll wrap things up with a well deserved bevy and freshly prepared feast from Riley's fish shack. 

Is this trip for me?

You love adventuring from A-B, getting that real sense of adventure and accomplishment from the journey. You’re fit and experienced in the saddle, either as a relatively fresh day rider or seasoned tourer. You feel alive in the big outdoors and love nothing more than camping out under expansive skies.
